"By default, the best video playback option will automatically be selected based on the video file and the device you are using, and you can change how this works by adjusting the Extended Dolby Vision option found in Infuse > Settings > Playback. "Dolby Vision comes in many different flavors, and today we’re adding expanded support for Dolby Vision Profile 8," announced Infuse. However, some videos will still fall back on HDR10, the company said. Infuse, which in our opinion is the best app for local media playback on Apple TV 4K, has added enhanced support for profile 8. It is kind of a mess and various media player apps are trying to get on top of the situation. For example, Dolby Vision profile 5 is used for video streaming over the internet from Netflix and other services while profile 7 is used exclusively on UHD Blu-ray discs (and not fully supported on any streaming players).ĭolby Vision profile 8 has additional sub-profiles that are backwards compatible: Profile 8.1 is backwards compatible with HDR10, profile 8.2 with SDR, and profile 8.4 with HLG (what iPhone 12 or newer shoots Dolby Vision videos in). So to close I still use plex as my server and to house all my content but I am using infuse on Apple TV 4k to play everything and plex does update the library when you watch. The ceiling speakers do appear to be engaged, but I find that to be true regardless of "Atmos" or not.The best media player app for Apple TV (tvOS) has been updated to version 7.5 with enhanced Dolby Vision support, trailers, smart groups, and video playback improvements.ĭolby Vision has many parts. Through a lot of research I have read that plex is just using a native Apple TV player and infuse built there own through the ground up, so that is why it works so well. direct play of all 4K HDR & Google tricky codec VP9.p2 in HDR. And Plex/Infuse say they're using that audio track, however my receiver will tell you what kind of audio format is being used, and it just says "Dolby Surround" whereas if I stream some Atmos-enabled thing off, say, Netflix, it'll say "Atmos". Plex‘s updated video player plays everything I throw at it, inc. For the titles I've ripped with Atoms, makemkv says the TrueHD codec is "Atmos HD" so I know I got it off the disc. One thing I can't figure out is if the rips are actually playing the Atmos track. I really figured the movies were saturating my network until I saw that "Infuse" worked just fine. It'll be here Monday sometime and I'll report back if that fixed my issue. For the price, that thing ought to have a Plex player built-in.Īnd yeah, I bought the $150 ATV with the ethernet port. We have an actual MadVR device between the audio processor and the projector, so it takes care of the HDR tone mapping for us with ease. And I really don't want to get into that. The most problematic of those is Dolby Vision. Maybe it’s not the network and it’s the AppleTV? Would upgrading to gthe latest gen3, or even some other device entirely, be a thing to do to avoid needing to transcode? Unfortunately the NAS that is the Plex server isn’t powerful enough to transcode the movies in real time.Īs a side note, transcoding UHDs is a lot more complicated than a standard blu-ray because of the various HDR formats. And also, most of all, it seems I care that I can actually stream them without lag! Help I have an Apple TV 4K and I want to use Plex on it. What I care about is saving my time of having to transcode a few hundred 4k UHD movies. Download Infuse Video Player and enjoy it on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac OS X 11. What do y’all recommend for a transcoding target? I don’t really care about saving space. I’m sure it’s just the sheer number of bits being shoved through the network. Playback works but it’s a little laggy and the audio is out of sync. Both the Plex server and the appletv are connected at gigabit. mkv files are served up via a Plex sever, streaming to a (first gen) AppleTV 4k (Plex player app installed) over a wired, gigabit network. I just into my 4k UHD collection tonight. I’ve been ripping DVDs for the past few weeks with makemkv and it’s been nice.
